This fish is a member of the Trichiurus family, which is a marine carnivorous fish and is found all over the world in tropical and subtropical regions and is an important source of fisheries. This fish has an elongated to slightly compressed body that is sharp towards the beginning and end of the body. A large mouth with barbed fangs on the jaws, which, due to its silver to blue color, reflects the light from the camera’s flash and makes it difficult to take pictures.
The length of this fish can reach 2.34 meters. The highest recorded weight was 5 kg, and the oldest was 15 years old. This species has been found at a depth of 0 to 589 meters, and the highest number of records is between 100 and 350 meters.
The global catch of this species in 2013 was reported to be about 1.3 million tons, while in Egypt, the internal cross-catch was 1812 tons from the Mediterranean Sea in 2010, and the highest catch per month was 195 tons.
The meat of this fish is hard and becomes soft after cooking, so a small percentage of fish smell and amount of oil is used for cooking. This soft-boned fish is an excellent source of animal protein, essential amino acids EAA, polyunsaturated fatty acids PUFA, vitamins and minerals.
